President Petro Poroshenko has urged the world community to support Ukraine in the protection of its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty more actively.
"We are eligible to defend our territory and our people with the support of the whole world," the Head of State has noted in the course of his speech at the 51st Munich Security Conference.
"20 years ago we gave up 1420 nuclear missiles in exchange for the guarantee. I think today we have a right to receive a non-lethal armament to defend our country in the framework of the Budapest memorandum," he has also emphasized.
"I know that a lot of experts argued about the provision of such support considering that military assistance would provoke aggression. But we see the opposite - lack of protection contributes to the escalation," Petro Poroshenko noted. He expressed belief that the enhancement of defense capacity would facilitate the resolution of the conflict in the Donbas.
"The stronger the protection is, the more convincing we are in our diplomacy," he said.
The President underlined that Ukraine had been a reliable partner that had always complied with its commitments aimed at achieving peace. "We have never violated the Minsk memorandum and are not making a single step which could have violated it," P. Poroshenko stated.
The Head of State has once again reminded that the situation in the Donbas was an issue of not only Ukraine's security, but also the security of Europe and the entire world. In this context, he has called on the global community to elaborate and approve new security guarantees. "Aggression shouldn't exist in Europe. We need a new Charter, in which the European countries could confirm their obligations and have a mechanism to prohibit and defend from violation. We need a mechanism to increase responsibility for the usage of the tactics of war," he said.
The President has also demonstrated additional evidence of Russian servicemen's presence in Ukraine and their participation in the armed conflict.
"Today I took passports and military ID of Russian soldiers and officers who came to us. It is the best evidence of aggression and presence of Russian militaries," Petro Poroshenko noted adding that the aggression against Ukraine, which severely affected civilians, had lasted for 8 months already.
"We want to demonstrate the whole world Russian soldiers and officers who "were lost" many kilometers from the border with weapons and tanks, who kill dozens, hundreds, thousands of our fellow Ukrainians," the Head of State said and added: "This aggression opens the chest of Pandora for the international security. One cannot postpone this decision. This conflict must be solved not frozen".
